British Successor Rule in Action

The British throne may be ruled by a Queen one day if the current queen, Queen Elizabeth approves the new legislation. Since 1701 in the Act of Settlement boys could could “jump” in line over their elder sisters in order to rule. The new legislation which has already passed the House of Lords states that if Prince William and Duchess Kate have a first born girl, then that girl could be the successor to the throne.

This is a very important topic in the lives of the British people. If Queen Elizabeth agrees to the new legislation, the baby would be third in the line of command as a new ruler. It is an interesting topic noting how much history there has been in the royal family. The heirs to the throne have predominantly been ruled by men, but this is all likely to change here soon if this new legislation gets passed in time. Another article on the royal baby states “but things could get complicated if the succession rules are not changed before the birth.”

  1. I feel like Queen Elizabeth should sign the legislature to allow a girl to be in line for the throne, after all she has been ruling for 60 years. Even though England is a country founded on tradition and the British people are usually not very open to change, I think this legislation doesn’t deviate too much from their current situation so they should be able to support it. After all, most of England’s greatest rulers where women so why should they deny that to a first born child. Other countries have been taking strides to treat women more like equals and this would definitely help the cause.

  2. I don’t see any logical reason for Queen Elizabeth not to sign the legislature allowing the girl to be first in line for the throne. I think this would be a positive change.
